Troubleshooting

What to check when something is missing or looks wrong.

Most problems come down to one of three things: the app has not asked OWC recently enough, something is configured on the website rather than in the app, or Android has withheld a permission.

My Events is empty

It only lists events you have announced a station on. If you have not announced any yet, it is empty and correct — use Search Events to find one.

If you announced a station on the website a moment ago, pull down to refresh. The app works from a saved copy and will not have seen it yet.

Search Events returns nothing

Check the Filter and Night at the top. A restrictive filter on a quiet night genuinely has nothing to return.

If the filter dropdown itself is empty, the app has not managed to read your filters — pull down on the Account screen to try again. Filters are created on the OWC website, not in the app.

No weather on any event

Forecasts are for your Home Site. With no Home Site set there is nowhere to forecast for. The Account screen will say (not set — see Saved Sites) if that is the problem.

Temperature and wind are also hidden by default unless they are worth flagging — that is Temperature, Wind and MagDrop Display in Settings, not a fault. Cloud cover should always appear.

Reminders do not arrive

  1. Check at least one lead time is selected in Settings.
  2. Check Android is allowing notifications for OW Mobile.
  3. Check Allow Exact-Time Reminders — without it Android may delay a reminder past the event.
  4. Open My Events and let it refresh. Reminders are scheduled from what the app knows, so an event it has not seen gets no reminder.

See Reminders for the permission steps in full.

The map shows no path

Some events have no path geometry to draw, in which case the map opens without one. If the path is there but you cannot see it, you may have panned away — close and reopen the map and it re-fits to the whole path.

The path lines are straight over mountains

That is the coarse correction. Fine terrain correction needs elevation data for the area, downloaded on demand — zoom in until the terrain icon shows a red cross and tap it. See The path map.

Chord names are missing from the map

Check Hide Chord Names in Settings. Names are also only drawn for the part of a chord currently on screen, so a chord just off the edge of the view has nowhere to put its label.

Report Observation is not there

It appears only on your own station, only after the event has passed. If you were watching the screen as the event time went by, leave the screen and come back.

If you have already reported, the outcome is shown instead — report again to change it.

Something looks wrong on screen

Pull down to refresh first: most oddities are a stale saved copy rather than a fault. If that does not help, and the app has recorded an error, a Send Error Reports button appears at the bottom of Settings. Sending it passes the details to the developers.

Tip

Reset all settings to default at the bottom of Settings is a safe thing to try. It touches display preferences only — never your account, your Home Site, your filter, or anything stored on OWC.
